Overall, I would honestly recommend this as a game changer to other turf farmers. It will change your farm. Your farm will get mowed when it needs to be mowed, and it'll also give you your life back. This Christmas, we spent more time with the family than we have done in the past five years.
Good day. I'm al Doggett from Yara Malong Turf.
We're based about an hour north of Sydney on the Central coast.
We're a smaller farm. We're not as big as a lot of farms. We supply generally to the public. We do have some contracts with the council and some landscapers, but we are not a massive farm.
So we found Swarm Farm robotics online. We were looking for an answer to one of the problems that I personally suffered from sitting in a tractor leaning forward, trying to make the thing mow a little bit quicker than I was allowed to, and spending so much time in that tractor that I wasn't with my family.
And for me, my family's super important. My employee’s families are super important. And it was one part of the farm that I really believe we could automate. Something that we could take ourselves out of and still have a good result. And that's how we found and ended up with Arnold or Kilo Two officially.
And those maintenance jobs that need to get done are getting done now because Arnold's picking up the slack. We can pack up ship at 3.30 and head off knowing that he's going to mow till 7.30. Somebody was in that tractor doing that before now, and he does it and he doesn't complain.
I guess the first thing for me was, how hard is this going to be. Now they made it really easy.
We have a heavy-duty mower deck. It has automatic height controls. The guys have just taken that deck, which is a standard product for the turf industry, top end, but standard and adapted that to Arnold.
Swarm Farm have done all that for us and now we've got a product that works as good, if not better than any mower we've ever had and we don't have to drive it.
Good day. My name's Will McCarthy, I'm the Chief Product Officer at Swarm Farm Robotics.
Any off the shelf mower, we can install a Swarm Connect kit on top of, which means that that mower can be used behind Swarm Bot.
It'll monitor speed vibration and ensure that the mower is successfully operating on the fields at all times. We operate all through an iPhone app and it's that easy. My 7-year-old will actually often send him out to mow paddocks. So our first commercial delivery, was actually on a turf farm.
We did have some issues in the beginning in turf, mainly around paddock planning and operating in smaller, tighter fields, where we needed to turn sharper and moving between paddock A to paddock B and how the road network and the farm layout needed to be inside of our system.
Over the last two to three years, we've spent a lot of time developing the technology to make it a lot easier for farmers to take control of that.
So now farmers can actually go and map and plan their fields themselves using our new farm manager platform, which really gives you the ability to make the robot operate the way you need it to operate for your business.
And that's probably the biggest development we've done that really makes SwarmBot work very well in the turf industry.
From a cost perspective, we were a little concerned at the start.
We were running numbers and they were making sense. But obviously, it was a new thing to us. Now we know we are two to three times better off than where we were before and we've already hit Swarm Farm up to sign us up for the next three years, because we want to do it at today's rate, not when they've worked out how much of a saving it is to us.
So as a farmer, when you buy something, you want to know it's going to work.
And if it doesn't, who's going to fix it?
So we have very few issues with Arnold. If we do have an issue now it's a quick phone call to Swarm Farm and the problem's fixed.
I guess coming from a construction background, although we occasionally work long hours, we'd also have a knockoff time and I found that farmers don't seem to have that knockoff time. And part of the reason is because things need to be done when they need to be done.
Whether that be a Sunday afternoon or a Wednesday night, for us Swarm Farm Robotics provided that answer in that Arnold doesn't wince.
He's happy to go out whenever we need him to. So if we need to cut Monday morning, he'll be out there Sunday night, I'll be with my family in the boat or riding horses, something like that, and he'll be out doing the job that I would've been doing.
And for me, that's gold. That's priceless.
